Had a great conversation with Gary Hoffmann of the Hoffmann Show on KFI640 AM Radio this morning about the selfie that has sparked a big backlash for one ignorant young lady.
Listen again.
I like to try to see things from every point of view, however, there some cringe worthy things to consider here. I can relate to the fact that she studied the Holocaust with her late father and that this was a trip she had hoped to take with him…
“Yeah, I do understand what happened there. I studied it for years with my dad and we always planned to visit there, but he died.”
…which in turn makes one think she might be even more sensitive to how a photo like this might be perceived on social media. We can’t possibly understand the details behind her trying to justify this photo in 140 characters. Personally, do not understand the necessity of that warm and smiling emoji.
Auschwitz is a place which typically overwhelms visitors with the enormity and gravity of the horrors which took place there.
At some point one might also expect that she would offer an apology of some sort. Instead she is boldly unapologetic and has (as many get sucked into doing) chosen to engage with angry folks.
It’s unfortunate that there does not appear to be an adult guiding or advising Miss Mitchell to, in the great words of one of my favs, Gordon Ramsay, “Shut it down!”.
As always, I remain passionate about starting conversations early with kids, and encouraging people of all ages to stop and THINK for a moment before sharing anything online.
Thanks for stopping by,
xo Jen “J.J.”
