Thoughts on the Boycott Target Petition – Let’s break down the hullabaloo about the loo!
At this point I have to believe any of us are more likely to be killed in a head on collision by a distracted or otherwise impaired driver than to have men who are transitioning to women flocking to the ladies restroom at Target.
I believe pedophiles have more access to our children through social media (where they can easily hide and call a lot less attention to themselves) than they would posing as a transgender person entering the ladies room at Target.
While I have empathy and understanding for any person going through gender identity issues, I do also believe, as is stated in the article via TODAY Show, that this does potentially give pedophiles and child or other predators new access to their victims. *potentially – key word.
According to 2011 findings from the Williams Institute, the transgender population represents about 0.3% of American adults. This translates to approximately 700,000 people – across the entire country.
Before allowing yourself to get completely spun up about this – which is what the media generally encourages us to do – please take a few minutes to consider rationally how this actually affects us as individuals living wherever we may live.
It is additionally interesting to me that a father decided to have a conversation with his six year old daughter about something she cannot possibly process or understand, other than her obviously natural reaction about it being “weird”. While I applaud his efforts to encourage love and kindness, I’m trying really hard to understand why Mr. Avraham even feels it’s necessary to talk about with a child so young. Every Target store has a single (private) family restroom (i.e., no one else may enter after you lock the door behind you), which any human being regardless of gender, age, race, weight, number of children, etc., is free to use.
I’m for letting a kid be six and not using her as a pawn to gain national media attention. If she’s six and questioning her own gender identity? Well, that’s different.
The fact is that, since the beginning of time (and public restrooms), if a person – man or woman – transgender, pedophile, predator, serial killer or otherwise, wanted to assault someone in a public restroom, the doors are open to whomever wants to walk in.
